Helical Anchors

HELICAL ANCHORS AND TIEBACKS

Helical anchors and tiebacks are factory-manufactured steel elements designed to provide tension resistance in either vertical or horizontal applications—such as guy wire support, uplift resistance due to wind or buoyancy effects, and lateral resistance for concrete retaining walls, seawalls, sheet piling, shotcrete walls and other earth retention systems. These tension elements are advanced into the ground by the application of torque.

HOW HELICAL ANCHORS WORK

Helical anchors provide lateral stability to foundation walls and retaining walls with unbalanced earth pressures. Our foundation experts install helical anchors and tiebacks throughout Texas.

The helical anchor or tieback system consists of a central shaft with one or more helix-shaped bearing plates welded to the lead section. Extension sections are used to advance the lead section to bear within competent soil, beyond any active zone or estimated failure plane.

The helical soil nail system consists of lead and extension sections with equal-diameter helix-shaped plates spaced evenly along the entire length of the central shaft. Soil nails are typically installed in a grid pattern within the soil mass to create an internally stable gravity wall/retaining system.

ADVANTAGES OF HELICAL ANCHORS

Helical anchors come with many advantages:

  • Predictable capacity
  • Helix blade configuration selected to achieve design embedment and capacity. Helix blades are engineered and configured to achieve the proper depth and capacity needed for each specific project.
  • All-weather installation
  • Can be installed in areas of limited or tight access
  • Installation does not generate spoils
  • Clean installation with no messy grout
  • Load tests can be performed immediately following installation
  • Available with optional hot-dip galvanizing for added corrosion protection
